Here is the summaries.
The topic that I chose to research was Islam in America. The reason that I chose this topic was because there is a lot of information in the news that left me wondering how many Islamic followers we have in the United States as well as the history on when they came to America. With the recent attack in Paris, many are questioning the religion and some of its followers.
Dating back to 1528, the first slave was documented as an Islamic follower. Estevanico was the name his Spanish master gave to him and they ended up in America after they were shipwrecked in what is now Texas (Islam in the United States , 2015). Moving forward in history it is estimated that several thousands of Muslims immigrated to the United States between the 1880s and 1914 (Islam in the United States , 2015). The main population of Muslims came from the areas that were the Ottoman Empire and the Mughal Empire. Ten to fifteen percent of the slaves that made the journey to colonial America from Africa were Muslims (Islam In America, n.d.). Many of the first slaves were forcibly converted to Christianity (Islam In America, n.d.). I found it interesting that between 1878 and 1924 Ford Motor Company was a big employer of Muslims because they were more willing to work in hot and difficult jobs (Islam In America, n.d.). Before the 19th Century most documented non-enslaved Muslims were merchants, travelers and sailors (Islam in the United States , 2015). The population grew drastically in the 20th Century due to a high birthrate and 72% of American Muslims are second generation (Islam in the United States , 2015).
According to the 2010 data, Islam is the fourth largest faith with .9% of the population. The other percentages are 78.3% Christianity, 16.4% unaffiliated, 1.8% Judaism and 1.2% Buddhism (Islam in the United States , 2015). According to the PBS, Islam is expected to be the second largest religion in America. I would consider Islam, when it first came to the United States, to be an outsider religion that was practiced in secret. As time goes on I see Islam growing and, as the PBS article states, if it is to be the second largest faith it will move from being an outsider religion to an insider religion. In my eyes you really have to understand the Islamic religion in order to not make false judgments. I think some extremists are giving the religion a bad image. This is leaving law abiding people to explain their religion to friends and neighbors. I think it is narrow mindedness that makes people make blanket statements like they should all go back to where they came from. When at the end of the day they have just as much of a right to be here as we do. It also caught me off guard to see famous people that I did not know were Muslim like Muhammad Ali (boxer), Anousheh Ansari (astronaut) and Rasheed Wallace (basketball player).
