Now that you have viewed the "REX" video clip and have responded to the question about what the teacher's next move should be, read NCTM's Teaching Children Mathematics article from the September 2010 issue titled, Supporting Children's Problem Solving.
Jacob's article was written after showing the 'REX' video to several hundred practicing teachers. She asked each teacher just what you were asked -- "If you were Rex's teacher, what would you do next?" and "Why?"
Jacob found that each teacher's response fit into one of four different categories.
Read the article and then think about your response. Which category would your response fit into? Were you trying to help Rex find the 'correct' answer?
After reading the article, watch the Rex video again. Look for evidence that Rex already possesses the counting on and counting back strategies. Pay attention to his emerging understanding of "10-ness." What does he do/say that gives you that information? Based on your new perspective after reading the Jacob's article, discuss what your next move might be.
This should only be a paragraph as well.
