Re:         Physical Security Report

This memo outlines the Physical Security Report assignment. Please note background, guidelines, date due and value.

Memo/Report format – To: Dr. Tony Tilly, President, Sir Sandford Fleming College; From: Your name and title; CC: Melanie Isaac.

Let’s imagine that Stephen Harper’s majority government has completed its mandate and another federal election has been called in Canada. Sir Sandford Fleming College is going to host a local all-candidates’ debate. The debate will be held on the evening of July 25, 2013, in Lecture Theatre 3700. One hundred and fifty people selected by ballot are expected to attend, along with members of the local and national media. It is also expected (although it hasn’t yet been confirmed) that Prime Minister Stephen Harper will make a brief appearance in support of the Conservative incumbent Dean Del Mastro. If the Prime Minister shows up, he is expected to take the stage between 21:00 and 21:15 hours.

The college has recently been awarded $1M by the provincial government for capital improvements, and college administration is taking this opportunity to spend a portion of this money to update the college’s security profile. Your task is to conduct a physical security survey of the college in preparation for the debate and the appearance of the Prime Minister (bearing in mind that the PM will have his own security detail with him). You must identify weaknesses or deficiencies with the existing security level, and then make recommendations to improve the security level of the location, taking into consideration the protection requirements. Your goal, then, is to provide security for the night in question and to improve security at the college for the long term. Present your findings in an analytical report, between 800 - 1000 words in length, double-spaced and in full block format. Provide any necessary supporting documentation (rough notes, diagrams and maps, for example) in Appendices.

You must include Table of Contents

  • Executive Summary (brief)
  • Introduction
  • Threat Assessment (in several paragraphs with subheadings)
  • Findings (Conclusion)
  • Recommendations
  • Appendix –rough notes from tour with John Gallen, diagrams or maps

Note: As with any other assignment, for this report you will respect the rules of academic integrity laid out by the college. If there are any concerns about students colluding on reports, these may be given a mark of zero. Any questions you may have regarding this assignment should be addressed to your seminar instructor. As always, you will be marked on content, structure, style and mechanics.

You must attend the week 8 lecture during which John Gallen, Head of Fleming Security, will take you on a tour of the area of the building being assessed for risk. You will have the opportunity to ask him questions and take notes during the tour.
