Project #66239 - English 203 Paper Budget is $50 no plagarism

Writing Exercise #2 asked you to devise your own thesis and to support it through close-reading analysis. In this, your final writing assignment, you will again devise a thesis and support it through close reading; however, here you will analyze two texts rather than only one.  In this essay, you will select two texts from the list below, and then close-read your chosen textual evidence in order to support an original thesis argument.

Possible texts to discuss:

The Tempest by William Shakespeare

“Barn Burning” by William Faulkner

The Arabian Nights

The Epic of Gilgamesh

“The Subordinate” by K. Saraswathi Amma

Selections from Noli me Tangere by José Rizal

The topic:

These texts express a persistent concern about rightful authority. They ask us to consider what makes a person’s authority legitimate, and whether errors in judgment should deprive a person of that legitimacy. With these issues in mind, select evidence from both texts and then formulate an arguable claim that interprets what these texts say about legitimate authority.

As you analyze evidence and make your argument, consider the following questions:

·         What qualities lead us to see a person’s authority as legitimate?

·         What are the consequences of a leader’s error(s) in judgment, and how do they impact said leader’s legitimacy?

·         How might a leader make amends for his or her errors in judgment?

·         What examples of illegitimate authority do these texts offer, and how might we interpret them in order to draw conclusions about legitimate authority?

While you should not feel obligated to address all of these questions, thinking about a few of them will help you specify and support your argument.

Moreover, this is a thesis-driven essay, not a compare-contrast essay. Although you are using two texts, you are making only one argument. The same argument must apply to both texts. In this essay, you will demonstrate your ability to detect and examine a single theme in two literary texts. Furthermore, you need to put the two texts into conversation with one another in the essay. The essay should not proceed by focusing entirely on one text and then entirely on the second text. In other words, an essay that discusses one work and stops, then moves on to the second will be unsuccessful.

Important Components of your Writing Exercise:

1)      Make sure you have a clear, specific, and original thesis, which makes an argument (not a summary or description) about legitimate authority

2)      Make sure to support your argument with four or five pieces of textual evidence from two texts.

3)      Make sure to close-read all of the evidence you incorporate into your argument, and be sure to tie your close reading into your thesis argument.
