This has 11 Questions and three assignments




1.    Compare the definitions of persuasion presented in the Howell (1973) article and in Chapter 1 of the textbook. How has the definition of persuasion changed over the past forty years? Based on your comparative analysis, predict how the definition of persuasion will change in the next forty years


2.    Advertising can be viewed as a leading form of persuasion that people confront on a daily basis. List and explain at least two other forms of persuasion you engage in or are confronted by on a regular basis. Are your experiences in this area positive or negative? How do morals and ethics affect the persuasion situations you choose to describe?


3.    Bob is in charge of the local waterpark. At the beginning of the summer, he built a new waterslide for his park. At the end of the summer, he saw that his ticket sales were double what they were a year ago. What criteria should Bob consider to determine if the new waterslide caused the increase in ticket sales? Why is it important to determine causation when conducting persuasion research?


4.    Compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of the Theory of Planned Behavior (covered in Chapter 5 of the textbook) and the Dual-Processes Models of Persuasion (covered in Chapter 6). Which theory do you think best explains the purposes for persuasion?


Assignment 1


Prepare a three- to five-page paper (not including title and reference pages), formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center, that cites at least two outside scholarly sources to delineate the differences between the terms persuasion, manipulation and seduction as they relate to human communication. Provide at least three modern-day examples of the varying types of persuasive devices and describe which audiences respond best to which techniques




5.    In Chapter 7, Magee explains the differences between supraliminal and subliminal primes. Discuss a supraliminal and subliminal prime that you personally experienced. Describe how effective each prime was at influencing your impression of the prime’s target. In general, which type of prime do you feel is more effective at persuading audiences?


6.    Describe a television show you have seen that would be considered “entertainment education”. What message was it trying to educate to audiences? What are the benefits to using entertainment programs as a means of educating audiences? What are the detriments to this approach?


Assignment 2


7.    Prepare a three- to five-page paper (not including title and reference pages), formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center, that details the importance of ethical behavior and its significance in persuasion. Define at least two ethical theories in your paper, and identify and describe the impact that ethical practices have on persuasion. Your paper must include at least three outside scholarly sources to support your opinions. You should choose an effective example to clearly illustrate your viewpoints such as a current event issue or personal experience


8.    Choose the “principles of compliance gaining” from Chapter 12 that you feel are the most effective. Explain the basis for the persuasiveness of these tactics and provide examples of how these tactics could be improved. Describe which groups of people are most susceptible to the tactics you analyze


9.    How does gender affect persuasion? Predict whether or not gender persuasion tactics will increase or decrease over the next 50 years, and why.




Assignment 3:


Prepare a three- to five-page paper (not including title and reference pages), formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center, that details the effectiveness of humor in persuasion. You may use this week’s recommended scholarly sources as a basis for your observations. Your paper should delineate three or more aspects of the effectiveness of humor and indicate at least three risks of attempting to use humor in persuasion. Your paper should include previous theories of persuasion and discuss how the technique of humor can support or limit the effectiveness of persuasion.


10.  Describe a time you were asked to conform in the work place and the decision you ultimately made when asked. What physical or psychological factors should be considered when deciding whether or not to conform to a group? What signs should you look for if you believe the people you work with are suffering from groupthink?


11.  Provide a three- to five-paragraph summary of the thesis and your main ideas for support for your Final Project. Detail the major points of your final presentation and allow your classmates to understand the major points of your paper


Assignment 4:


Has two parts:


  1. A six- to eight-page paper on Socialism
  2. A PowerPoint presentation.


Requires you to tackle a current controversial issue with multiple valid positions and use persuasion to convince your audience that your position on the issue is correct. The written portion of your assignment must be six to eight pages of content (not including title and reference pages) and can include multimedia, interactive video, pictures, commercials, movie scenes, web links, etc. to bolster your opinions. Your paper should incorporate the latest methods of persuasion to prove your points to your instructor. You are encouraged to find a topic that you feel passionate about. The list provided is just to help you with the sorts of ideas that may be appropriate for your project. You are not limited to these topics, but please consult your instructor if you have any questions about a proper topic for this assignment. Topics to consider include:
