Improving the productivity of any company will result in better financial and operational performance. To create a strategy for optimal operations, complete the following instructions. Write 2-3 paragraphs, below your "Production and Operations" heading in your business plan, describing how your business will manage inventory to minimize cost and maximize profits (a minimum of 300 words for this section), using information in this week's course document.

The company will establish a computerized inventory system, which will ensure:

  • a wide assortment of high demand products
  • minimum stock to fulfill customer demand
  • rapid inventory turnover at a high profit level
  • minimize carrying and procurement costs
  • volume purchases to obtain to lowest prices
  • clearance sales on slow moving or obsolete items 


Our primary book supplier will be Ingram Book Group. In addition, inventory for our bookstore will be obtained by buying direct from publishers, book wholesalers (other than Ingram), remainder books, and used books. A letter of intent has been signed with a Japanese supplier of foreign comics for exclusive distribution of their products in Spokane, Washington.

Time to think about staffing issues for your business. Human Resource

Create a paragraphs, below your "Human Resources" heading in your business plan, containing a job description (i.e., duties and responsibilities) for a position in your business (a minimum of 100 words for this section), using information from this week's course document.

Write a second paragraph describing the job specifications for that same position (i.e., qualifications, skills, experience, education, etc.), using information from this week's course documents (a minimum of 100 words for this section).

Write a third paragraph describing how you will recruit and select an applicant for the position and the type of interview questions (a minimum of 100 words for this section) you will ask to ensure the candidate has the qualifications for the position and is the right fit for the company.

Write a fourth paragraph explaining how you will evaluate, compensate, and train the person in that position (a minimum of 100 words for this section).

Human Resources

To support the sales revenue projection for the first year, a full time and a part time sales clerks will be needed. For the second year, the part time sales clerk will be getting additional hours and becomes full time during the third year. The following job analysis, evaluation, recruitment and selection information will ensure that we are prepared for changes in our human resource needs. 

Job Analysis

Job description - the duties and responsibilities of the bookstore sales clerk, or customer service representative, position include:

  • Meet and greet customers.
  • Assess customers' needs and recommend products that satisfy their needs.
  • Answer customer questions in a pleasant and cheerful manner.
  • Provide in-store, telephone, and online customer service.
  • Work 40 hours a week, with overtime during holidays.
  • Assist owners in tracking and maintaining computerized inventory.
  • Attend training sessions to remain current on product and merchandising trends in science and science fiction book, and comic book marketplaces.
  • Remain current with information on science and science fictions books, along with comic books.
  • Work with the owners to frequently update marketing displays, using the latest in merchandising trends.
  • Shelve and restock books, dust and arrange books as needed. 
  • Clean areas and pull books being returned to the distributors.
  • Lift cartons, price and move merchandise to proper locations. 

Job specifications -  the qualifications of the bookstore sales clerk, or customer service representative,  position include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Two years bookstore sales experience
  • Customer service/management skills 
  • Customer service oriented
  • Outgoing, self-motivated, and flexible in a fast-paced, growth-oriented, and time-critical environment
  • Demonstrated organizational ability to facilitate multi-tasking
  • Knowledgeable in visual displays
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Broad knowledge of science and science fiction book industry (publishers, authors, genres, titles, etc.)
  • Applicant must be able to clear a criminal background check
  • Applicant must have good credit history
  • Proficiency with productivity computer software applications
