Project #30864 - physics

1. Each tire of a school bus has a diameter of 40 inches. when the tread has worn down .6 inches in diameter, the tire is worn out. Imagine the tire as a roll of rubber tape unwinding as the tire rolls. If the tire rolls 20,000miles, what is the average thickness of teh rubber worn off in each rotation of the tire? Convert your answer to Angstroms (1A'=10-10m) (A carbon atom has a diameter of about 1.54A')

2. As a spider descends, spinning a web, it trails behind it a tiny strand of fibre. Imagine for a moment that the gasoline on a bus is not burned, but left behind as a strand in back of the moving bus. Compute the diameter of that strand (assume it is cylindreical) of the gasoline in inches and in centimeters using the following data:  A bus gets 2 mi./gallon of gasoline and one gallon = 231 cubic inches.
