1. In class, we discussed the official distribution of M&M colors reported by the manufacturers, we tested the observed frequencies of a sample bag against the null hypothesis that they followed the manufacturers’ stated distribution and found that they did not differ significantly from the expected frequencies. Use the frequencies from the sample bag discussed in class to answer the following questions:

a) If I suspect that the color distribution is actually uniform (i.e., each color occurs with equal frequency), what would the expected frequencies be?

b) Are the observed frequencies significantly different from the expected frequencies described in (a)? Assume alpha=0.05.

2. A local county is considering a budget proposal that would allocate extra funding toward the renovation of city parks. A survey is conducted to measure public opinion concerning the proposal. A total of 150 individuals (some from the suburbs and some from the city) respond to the survey.  The proportion of responses in each category is as follows:

a) Is there a significant difference in the distribution of opinions for city residents compared to those in the suburbs? Test at alpha = 0.05.

b) Evaluate the strength and direction of the relationship between home location and opinion using the Ï• coefficient. Interpret the results.
