# Project #20148 - Statistics

two questions

```2. Olive oils from different places have distinct tastes.  Can the olive oils
from different regions of Italy be distinguised based on their combinations
of fatty acids?  The data consist of the percentage composition of 8 fatty
acids found in the lipid fraction of 572 Italian Olive Oils.  There are nine
collection areas:  4 from Southern Italy, 2 from Sardinia, and 3 from Northern
Italy.  The data set olive.txt contains region and fatty acid information
```
```     for 572 samples.  Examine this data with the aim of distinguishing between
regions and area by using fatty acid composition.
```
```     (a) Make a table of mean and median values of the percentages for each area,
grouping the areas within regions.
```
```     (b) complement the analysis with boxplots for each variable.  Which variables
look promising for separating the regions?
```
```     (c) It is possible that the regions can be more clearly separated by considering
pairs of variables.  Use the variables that appear to be informative
from the analysis so far to make scatter plots.  How can the regions
be separated based on the scatter plots?
```
```     (d) How well can the areas within regions be distinguished?
```
```  3. The file hiv-example.csv contains data from a clinical trial of treatments
for HIV. The file hiv-example.txt contains the documentation for the data.
For this problem, use the 2nd baseline measures when asked.
```
```     (a) Provide summary statistics for baseline and 8 week followup for CD4 and
RNA.
```

1

```(b) Graph the baseline and follow up measures of CD4 and RNA using whatever
graphical tools facilitate understanding the data.
```
```   (c) Determine appropriate tests for differences between follow up and baseline
measures for both CD4 and RNA. Carry out your tests and discuss your
conclusions.
```
```   (d) find 95 and 99% confidence intervals for the mean CD4 and RNA follow
ups.
```
```   (e) Test for sex differences in CD4 and RNA baseline levels and then again
for follow up levels.
```
