Based on what you learned about the problem described in the discussion, you will submit a written report describing your solution to the problem. The report is due on the last day of the module (Sunday at 11:59pm).
The American Sugar Council reported a study on the relationship between children's sugar consumption and hyperactivity. For the study, they recruited 30 volunteer families and asked them to keep a food dairy for 30 days. At the end of the 30 days, parents were asked to complete a questionnaire detailing their perceptions of their children's energy and activity levels, specifically after consuming sugary treats. By comparing the energy and activity levels of children who consumed large amounts of sugary foods with those who did not, the Council concluded that there is no link between sugar consumption and hyperactivity. (This is a fictional example.) Use the 8 guidelines on pages 311 through 316 of the reading to critique this study. (Be sure to refer to the guidelines in your critique).
- Do you believe the conclusions of this study? (Make sure to back up your conclusions with ideas from the reading, not just your personal experience or opinion.)
- What are the strengths and weaknesses of the study design?
- Who would you design a study differently to answer this question?
Submit a written solution to this problem. Be sure to answer all parts of the problem, and to state your conclusions clearly and explicitly. You may use any information or ideas from the discussion board, but you are expected to write your solution yourself, using your own words to explain your reasoning. Explaining your reasoning in clear, mathematically-accurate language, using complete sentences and proper grammar, are critical to your write up.
