Genetic diversity among the animals and plants has been brought about by several processes like mutation, sexual reproduction etc. Breeding techniques and genetic modification that is recombinant technologies utilizes the altered gene sequences produced by the mutation and sexual reproduction.



In genetics a mutation is a change of the nucleotide sequence of the genome of extra chromosomal genetic element, or an organism virus. Mutations result from unrepaired damage to DNA or to the RNA genomes which result from errors in the process of replication or from the insertion or deletion of DNA segments by the mobile genetic elements.

Mutation is the ultimate source of variation, without variation there could be no evolution, so mutations are of great importance to evolution.

Today there are many diseases present which resulted due to the accidental changes in the DNA sequences like Sickle cell anaemia. Here one gene in the DNA gets changes due to mutation causes deformation of haemoglobin. The structure of haemoglobin becomes sickle shapes which are not able to transport oxygen due to which finally the patient dies (Jose S.,2013).

There are numerous examples about the mutant genes which cause abnormality in the individuals like the incidence of atomic bomb explosion took place in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It causes devastation besides that it caused mutation in the genetic sequences of the victims. As a result even todays also the new-borns are found suffering from physical abnormalities.


Sexual reproduction


Sexual reproduction is a process that creates a new organism by combining the genetic material of two organisms which occurs to both in prokaryotes and in eukaryotes.

Here male and female gametes fuse to form zygote which further turns into an organism. This kind of reproduction is much more complicated than the asexual reproduction.

It is also responsible for genetic diversity.

Like in case of Cheetah, to enhance the reproduction artificial insemination technique was utilized where the semen of the male is directly into the female so that the sperms can reach the ova via short distance. This technique was utilized to produce cheetah cubs in United States (Anonymous, 2012).

The mutation caused in the genetic sequences of the parent is inherited to the next generation via sexual reproduction, Like in case of sickle cell anaemia, the heterozygous parents act as carriers. So if the heterozygous male mates with the heterozygous female then there are 25 % chances of sickle cell anaemia in the offspring (Anonymous.).




Migration is the movement of genetic diversity usually within a species. In plants it occurs through pollen dispersal, and movement of vegetative propagates, such as suckers or rhizomes, seed dispersal and in species that can reproduce asexually. Migration is also called gene flow. Among the plants the genetic variations due to migration are common.

The interesting part is the genetic diversity among the human beings due to migration. Like after the emigration and immigration the blacks as well as whites got scattered in different areas.

Today the Black and White marriages have become very common; this is obvious that such marriages will lead to great diversity.

The genetic combination of the individuals of two unknown population produces new organism with entirely new genetic makeup.

Migration refers to the movement of alleles between the populations. Migration causes interbreeding that mating between the individuals of different population leading to the formation of new species (Anonymous, Chapter 6).


Population Size:

Population size also has a significant role in genetic diversity because it shows changing patterns of genes according to the changes in the environmental conditions.

The physical distribution of a species, a species with a wide-ranging distribution hardly has the same genetic nature over its entire variety. For examplepersons in a population living at one end of the range may meet different environmental conditions as they live at a higher height than others living at the opposite end at a lower altitude.

It also affects population size, the migrating persons stay and mate with the purpose individuals; they can provide a sudden influx of alleles because after mating is established between the migrating and destination persons. The migration will contribute gametes carrying alleles that can change the current proportion of alleles in the target population changing its size.

Genetic variations serve as raw material for evolutionary changes within flora and fauna populations. This allows populations to evolve in reaction to environmental alteration, whether that is new or altered diseases, parasites, pests, predators or competitors, greenhouse warning, pollution or ozone layer depletion (Frankham R., 1995).



From the above discussion it is clear that all the factors are interconnected. The mutation takes place in the DNA of one organism. It is further inherited to next generation. Migration causes the relocation of these mutant organisms which further mates with the organism of different population affecting the population size giving rise to a new population.

This is how genetic diversity occurs in the environment. Many times it causes bad results and increase in the number of deadly diseases.
