1.      A reproductive physiologist studying the effect of photoperiod on reproductive readiness in Japanese quail measured the cloacal gland widths of male quail exposed for two weeks to different day lengths. Long days considered of 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark. Short days had 8 hours of daylight and 16 hours of dark. Assume cloacal gland widths are normally distributed;

a) Please use traditional method to test whether the variance of the two samples are the same, α = 0.05

 Long days Short days `X1 = 12.0 mm X2 = 8.5 mm S1= 2.5 mm S2=2.0mm n1 = 16 n2 = 16

b) Based on the conclusion from 1), please choose an appropriate test to exam whether the glands are significantly wider during long days? You can choose either traditional or P-value method, α = 0.05.

2. Treatment group:  n = 25, xbar = 98.5, s = 0.78

Placebo group:  n = 30, xbar = 98.2, s =0.52

a)      Use a significant level of α=0.05 and assume that all populations are normally distributed.  Claim: The treatment population and the placebo population have different variances. Use P-value method of testing hypothesis.

b)   Based on your conclusion from 1), choose an appropriate test to exam whether treatment population has bigger mean than Placebo population. You can choose either traditional or P-value , α = 0.05.

3.  Claim: Heights of male statistics students have a larger variance than female statistics students. Use P-value method of testing hypothesis, α = 0.05.

Male:         n=16, xbar = 68.4, s = 0.54

Female:     n = 12, xbar = 63.2, s = 0.39
