Discussion Preparation: Practitioner-Scholar

This unit is about scholarship and practice in psychology, about the ability to connect the rigor of theory and research with the relevance of practice. Capella University addresses that connection by building its degree programs on the scholar-practitioner model. This study introduces that model, and provides the reading and thinking you need to take the first step toward your assignment, due in Unit 3.

Begin this process by using the reading below to prepare for this unit's discussion, Psychology Practitioner-Scholars.

Psychology Practitioner-Scholars

As mentioned in the introduction, connecting scholarship and practice is critical for professionals in psychology. In the discussion preparation study, you examined both the scholar-practitioner Model, as presented in McClintock's article, and Capella's learning model which is based on the ideas in that article. In Capella's learning model, the master's level degree program is described as practitioner-scholar, to distinguish it from the doctoral degree program, which is described as scholar-practitioner. For this discussion, let's discuss the insights we gained from working with this model. Respond to the following questions:

  • In your own words, what is the difference between a practitioner-scholar and a scholar-practitioner?
  • In your own words, what does it mean to be a practitioner-scholar within the field of psychology?
  • How has your knowledge of this model changed your vision and goals in the field?
  • What are the top three aspects of knowledge and skill that you need to develop to become a psychology practitioner-scholar?

If you had any trouble understanding the scholar-practitioner model or its application in the field of psychology, use this discussion to receive support from your peers and instructor to work through your challenges.

Be sure to integrate both readings (the McClintock encyclopedia entry and the Capella Practitioner-Scholar Guide) into your discussion response and use the following APA reference:

  • Capella University. (2003). Learning model quick reference guide. Minneapolis, MN: Author.
  • McClintock, C. (2003). Scholar practitioner model. In A. DiStefano, K. E. Rudestam, & R. J. Silverman (Eds.), Encyclopedia of distributed learning (pp. 394–397). Thousand Oaks, CA: SAGE.

Response Guidelines

Read your peers' discussion posts and respond to at least two of them.
