Mary Wollstonecraft, “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman”

Lindsay A.H. Parker, “Family and Feminism in the French Revolution:  The Case of Rosalie Ducrollay Jullien,” Journal of Women’s History 24, no. 3 (2012): 36-61.

1.      What are some of Wollstonecraft’s criticisms of women?  Be specific.

2.      What does Wollstonecraft propose should be done to amend these wrongs, to improve the condition of women, and improve society as a whole?

3.      Who is Rosalie Ducrollay Jullien?  Describe her personal life?  How does she live?  Is she privileged? What is her education level and how did she receive her education?

4.      Briefly explain the process of Jullien’s feminist awakening as argued by Parker.  What happened to shift her attitude and how is this new awareness demonstrated?

5.      What do you think Wollstonecraft would have thought of Jullien?  Given what we know Wollstonecraft thinks of most contemporary women, would she like Jullien or approve of her?  Why or why not?  Support your claim with evidence from the text.
