Project #121921 - FILM AND SOCIETY: RESEARCH PAPER

Assignment

For this paper, your task is to choose a film mentioned in the text that we have NOT watched in class and research 3-5 primary sources as a means for better understanding the film and its era. Finally, write a 2000-2500 word essay in which you examine and explain the significance of the film as it related to American society at the time, drawing upon your research and our course text.

What is a primary source? A primary source is an original article, closest in publication to the film and era under study. In this case, it would be a review or feature article published in a credible newspaper or magazine in the years in which the film was released. So, if you were researching a film like The Graduate, you would be looking for reviews or articles about the film that were published around the years 1967-1969, when it came out.

Use these resources together with the knowledge you’ve gained from the class to forge a better understanding of how audiences were thinking about your chosen film and its relevance to larger societal issues at the time.

Your paper should quote liberally from both your primary articles and from the course text as a means of providing evidence for your paper.

Recommended Research Sources

Our university library has online access to a number of newspapers that date back to the 1940s. The New York Times, in particular, is an invaluable resource that will provide PDFs of the original articles (and ads!) as they were published. You just need your UMID to log in off-campus.

I recommend searching these newspapers, which you can find at the link below.

New York Times Historical

Wall Street Journal Historical

Chicago Tribune Historical

Los Angeles Times Historical

You will get best results if you limit the dates to just the relevant years. You may also need to search multiple keywords, such as the film title, director name, actor name, etc. (cont.)

You are not limited to using these newspapers or resources (you are certainly encouraged to visit the library in-person to view physical archived materials) but be sure to choose credible historical publications.
