Project #121402 - 10 page research paper

Assignment: Write a final research paper on a student-selected topic based on an aspect of dance, culture and society explored in this course.

You may formulate your research question or area of investigation from a key concept or thread in one of the assigned readings, films, dance workshops, or lectures (guests included).

You may also select something you wish to learn more about that is related to, but not directly represented in, the readings, films, workshops and lectures.

The purpose of this paper is to give you the experience of intentionally engaging in an investigation that relates to the content of this course. This is an opportunity for you to research something that you want to study more deeply.

The paper should be a minimum of 10 pages double-spaced, font size 12, 1 inch margins.

Source requirements and guidelines: Carefully cite the source of all ideas (both paraphrased and quoted). Use a minimum of five scholarly research articles that were not assigned in the course, and at least one of the scholarly research articles that were assigned for the course. These will supplement and support your research.

Use Chicago Style End Notes and Bibliography for your citations.

Course Description

In this course we will open our eyes to the discipline of dance. We will examine the dynamics of dancing as a human phenomena -- dance as ritual, dance as rite, dance as entertainment, dance as wellness modality, dance as art and dance as agent for political activism. We will use a series of readings, live and filmed performances as our resource “texts.” We will also use the lecture demonstrations of guest dancers and scholars for our source material. We will move and write. While this course will investigate many cultures, dance in the American experience will be our point of departure and the place of our frequent return. We will particularly return to dance that “lives” in the Los Angeles community because that is where we live at this moment. However, in order to make sense out of our local experiences, we must frequently take a more panoramic or global view.

The course asks you to look broadly around you: into the past, into the present, into the local community, and into the world. It also asks you to investigate the worlds within you: the past, present and even future. It asks you to think with your mind and with your body. It asks you to connect what you learn to your spirit. It asks you to re-call, re-envision, re- member. You will think and feel with your muscles, your analytical brain, and your imagination.

Ultimately, this course asks you to be alive in the moment as you connect what you experience and learn to your other studies and life experiences. Dancing skills or prior experience with dance are not a part of your grade for this course.
