This assignment is comprised of three components. Preparation, Action, and Reflection.
Preparation: Students will identify issues affecting the community in areas related to the healthcare field. Student will come up with a plan to address the area of concern identified by selecting a location to conduct community service hours.
Action: Students will work with the instructor and community members to secure a location to complete their community service hours. Students are required to complete 10-15 hours during the semester. Locations can include but are not limited to hospitals, homeless shelters, elderly homes or senior citizen centers, hospice, Salvation Army, and animal shelters.
Reflection: Create a powerpoint presentation reflection that explores active citizenship, advocacy addressing how students will educate the community about the particular problem identified, and a personal reflection regarding what was learned from the experience. Address all of the following points that are applicable to your community service experience:
Address the following questions, either in the speaker notes or in the text of the slides:
1.What theories of attitude and behavior change did you observe?
2.Explore the issues of self-esteem, self-efficacy, and locus of control on the populations you worked with - what impact does society and culture have on these concepts for those individuals?
3.What did you learn about people through your experience?
4.What social psychological factors did you observe in action?
5.What verbal and nonverbal communications did you observe?
6.Include a scanned copy of sign-off sheets or verifications of hours. Also include any pictures you took during your experiences!
